Trump declares special envoy Witkoff may visit Russia
Speaking to reporters before leaving his New Jersey golf resort, Trump said Witkoff’s visit could happen on “Wednesday or Thursday,” noting, “They would like to see him. They've asked that he meet. So, we’ll see what happens.”
This comes just days before Trump’s imposed deadline for Russia to end its military actions in Ukraine. The president warned that if Moscow doesn’t comply by Friday, the US will implement sanctions and secondary tariffs.
“There’ll be sanctions,” Trump said. “But they seem to be pretty good at avoiding sanctions.”
In response to Trump’s recent expression of “disappointment” over the lack of progress, Russian President Vladimir Putin urged him to temper his expectations and return to negotiations.
“All disappointments come from excessive expectations. That’s a general rule,” Putin said at a press conference in Valaam on Friday.
Originally, Trump had given Russia 50 days to end the conflict, which began in February 2022. However, he shortened the deadline in late July to about 10 or 12 days—set to expire this coming Friday.
